AI affects everyone differently.
Start where it affects you.

You do not need to understand all of AI to find the part that matters to your life. Choose a starting point and step into the part of the AI world that feels relevant to you.

You are not choosing a box. You are choosing a place to start. Every world remains connected, and you can move between them at any time.
Your AI World Choose a place to start
Your AI World / Family

AI has already entered the family conversation.

From children talking to chatbots to scam calls that sound like someone you know, AI at home is about trust, judgement and knowing what deserves a second look.

Start with thisIs my child safe talking to an AI chatbot?
AI at HOME People first
Family lens AI touches relationships before technology.
Family first
01

Start with the question happening in your home.

Family is deliberately warmer and more familiar. The movement represents the people and relationships AI touches rather than AI itself being the centre of attention.

Current family question

Is my child safe talking to an AI chatbot?

AI can support learning and creativity, but children may also use it for personal advice, emotional conversations or companionship.

What matters firstTreat AI as part of your child's digital life, not as a completely separate world.
Who is using AI in your home?
02

The useful conversation changes with the person.

A child, teenager, parent and older family member may encounter AI in very different ways. Choose someone in the household to see what is worth noticing and talking about.

Child

AI may already appear in learning, games, creative tools and conversation.

FAMILY CONTEXT

Children may use AI to ask questions, create things, get help with schoolwork or talk about topics they feel awkward asking someone else about.

Where AI may appear Homework, games, chatbots, creative tools and everyday questions.
Worth talking about AI can sound friendly and certain without necessarily being right or understanding them like a person would.
Family habit Keep conversations open enough that they can show you when something feels strange, confusing or too personal.
Create your family AI agreement
03

Four simple things worth agreeing on at home.

This is not a legal policy or a list of technical rules. It is a simple way to make AI use easier to talk about before something important, confusing or uncomfortable happens.

What stays private?
CONVERSATION STARTER

Agree on the information that should not be casually entered into an AI tool.

Passwords, banking details, identity information, private family matters and confidential information deserve more care than an ordinary question.

Try saying “Before we paste something into AI, let’s ask whether the tool actually needs to know that detail.”
A simple family rule Use AI openly. Protect private information. Check important things. Ask a person when it matters.

Your AI World / Work

AI is changing work task by task.

The useful question is not only whether AI will take a job. It is where AI enters the work, what still needs a person, and which parts of your role become more important.

Start with thisWill AI take my job?
One simple way to see it Human → AI → Human
Human / Context You define what good work looks like before AI touches the task.
Human responsibility runs through the whole workflow.
What part of your work changes?
01

Follow the task, not just the job title.

Most roles contain different kinds of work. Choose the part closest to what you do and see where AI may help — and where human judgement still matters.

Your ROLE made of many tasks
Repetitive work

AI may change the routine parts before it changes the whole role.

Repeatable, information-heavy tasks can be useful places for AI assistance, especially when the result is easy for a person to review.

AI can help with Drafting, sorting, summarising and first-pass organisation.
Keep human The goal, exceptions, quality check and final responsibility.

Your AI World / Everyday Life

AI should fit into your day, not take over your day.

You do not need complicated prompts or a dozen tools. Start with small, useful moments where AI can help you organise, understand, write or think more clearly.

Start with this What is AI actually useful for in normal life?
Your DAY Start small
Morning Start with planning, not complexity. Turn a messy list into a simple plan or ask AI to explain something before the day gets busy.
What do you need help with?
01

Use AI for the task in front of you.

Pick something you are already trying to do. The goal is not to “use AI more.” The goal is to make one ordinary task easier while keeping the judgement with you.

Plan something
Low-stakes starting point

Turn a messy list into a clearer plan.

Give AI the notes, errands or ideas you already have and ask it to group them into a practical order.

Try AI for this “Turn these notes into a simple checklist for today.”
Still your job Decide what actually matters and what fits your real day.
How much should I trust it?
02

The higher the stakes, the more you should slow down.

AI is easiest to experiment with when a mistake is easy to spot and easy to fix. Move across the scale to see how the level of checking should change.

Easy to check Needs more verification
Planning Drafting Comparing Important decisions
Great place to experiment

Use AI where a wrong answer is easy to notice and fix.

Planning a day, drafting a casual message, organising ideas and brainstorming options are useful places to learn how AI behaves.

Simple rule The easier it is to check the result, the easier it is to experiment.

Your AI World / Safety & Privacy

Before you trust it, check it. Before you share it, protect it.

AI can make information faster, more convincing and easier to create. That makes one habit especially useful: know when to pause before you believe, share or act.

Start with this What should I never share with an AI tool?
Check before TRUST Pause • Check • Verify
Message Urgency is a reason to slow down. If a message pressures you to act quickly, verify the person or organisation through a second channel you already trust.
What should I share?
01

Know what you are giving the tool before you press send.

Not every prompt carries the same privacy risk. Use this as a simple habit: remove details the tool does not need and be more cautious as the information becomes personal, confidential or sensitive.

Okay to explore

Start with information that does not identify or expose someone.

LOWER RISK

Generic questions, public information and drafts with sensitive details removed are easier places to experiment.

01A generic question
02Public information
03A draft with private details removed
Good habit Give the tool only the information it actually needs.
Something feels wrong
02

Pause. Verify. Decide.

You do not need to prove something is fake before slowing down. Choose a situation and the three-step response changes with it.

Your response
Urgent payment request
01
Pause Do not let urgency make the decision for you.
02
Verify Contact the person or organisation through a number or channel you already know.
03
Decide Only act after the important detail has been independently confirmed.
✓
Remember A few extra seconds of checking can matter more than a fast response.
Les Moir

Your AI World / Learning

Use AI to strengthen your thinking, not replace it.

AI can explain, question, coach and review. The useful part is not getting to an answer faster — it is using the tool in a way that leaves you understanding more than when you started.

Start with this How do I use AI without letting it think for me?
Your THINKING You stay in the loop
Explain Ask for a clearer explanation, not a finished answer. “Break this down in plain language and give me one simple example.”
How should I ask AI to help me learn?
01

Change the role you give the AI.

“Give me the answer” ends the thinking quickly. A better prompt can make AI act more like a teacher, quiz partner, coach or reviewer.

Teach me
KEEP THE THINKING ACTIVE

Ask for an explanation that checks whether you understood.

Use AI to simplify the idea, show one example and then ask you a question so the conversation does not stop at passive reading.

Try this “Explain this as if I’m new to it. Then ask me one question to check I understood.”
Avoid relying on “Just give me the answer.”
Why it helps You get support, but you still have to process and respond to the idea yourself.
Am I learning — or just outsourcing?
02

Keep enough of the work with you that the understanding stays yours.

Move across the scale. The further AI moves from helping you think toward doing the thinking for you, the more likely you are to finish the task without learning much from it.

Doing the thinking myself Letting AI do everything
Explain Guide Draft Do it for me
HEALTHY SUPPORT

AI is helping you think, but you still have to do something with the idea.

Explanations, questions, hints and feedback can make learning easier without removing the part where you understand, practise and decide.

Simple check If AI disappeared, could you explain what you learned in your own words?
Les Moir
Your human guide

Les on learning.

AI is powerful when it helps someone understand more clearly. It becomes less useful when it simply replaces the thinking they needed to do.

Your AI World / Business

Don’t start with AI. Start with the problem.

Useful business AI usually has a clear job inside a real process. Understand the problem, map the workflow, define where AI helps and keep a person responsible for the result.

Start with this Where should a business actually start with AI?
Problem START WITH FRICTION
What is actually slowing the business down?

Look for repetitive work, delays, inconsistent handoffs or information that takes too long to organise before choosing a tool.

Where could AI actually help?
01

Give AI one useful job inside the business.

Choose an area. The examples are deliberately practical: assistance with a defined task, not “automate the whole business.”

Your BUSINESS One process at a time
Customers
DEFINED SUPPORT

Use AI to help organise and prepare, not to remove judgement from the relationship.

Customer-facing work often contains repeatable preparation alongside moments that need empathy, context and a person who can take responsibility.

Possible AI support
  • Summarise enquiries
  • Draft first responses
  • Group common questions
  • Organise feedback themes
Keep human
  • Complaints and sensitive situations
  • Promises made to customers
  • Exceptions and unusual cases
  • Final relationship decisions
Should this be automated?
02

Check the process before you automate the process.

A task does not become a good automation candidate simply because software can perform part of it. Select the statements that are true for the workflow you are considering.

START WITH THE PROCESS

First make sure you understand what the task actually requires.

A clear process is more important than an impressive AI tool. Map the steps, inputs, exceptions and owner before deciding what to automate.

What to look for Repetition + clear rules + detectable mistakes + human review.
This is a practical readiness guide, not a guarantee that a workflow should be automated.
Les Moir
Your human guide

Les on AI & business.

AI is not the strategy. It can support the strategy when the problem, process and responsibility are clear.

Your AI World / The Future

The future gets clearer when certainty and possibility are separated.

AI attracts big predictions. A useful way to think about them is to separate what is visible now from what is still developing, merely possible or highly uncertain.

Start with this How worried should I really be about where AI is going?
Already happening VISIBLE NOW
Start with the changes people can already see and use today.

AI is already present in common activities such as writing, image generation, search, support and analysis. Begin there before jumping to dramatic long-term scenarios.

How should I read an AI prediction?
01

Inspect the claim before reacting to the headline.

Predictions can sound precise even when the assumptions underneath them are not. Choose an example claim and look at the questions that make it easier to judge what is actually being said.

Prediction decoder

“AI will replace most jobs.”

ASSUMPTION-HEAVY
What is actually being claimed? Does “replace” mean whole jobs, particular tasks, fewer people, or roles changing over time?
What evidence would matter? Real adoption, task-level changes, employer behaviour and measured outcomes matter more than a dramatic demonstration alone.
What timeframe? A claim about next year is very different from a claim about the next twenty years. No timeframe means more ambiguity.
What has to happen first? Technology, cost, reliability, trust, workplace adoption and other real-world constraints all affect what happens next.
Useful habit Replace “Will this happen?” with “What evidence would make this more or less likely?”
What can I actually do about the future?
02

You do not need to predict the future to prepare for it.

Some changes are outside any one person’s control. The more useful question is what sensible habits and skills are worth building now.

Outside your control You do not need to solve these today.
01Exactly how fast AI develops
02What every organisation adopts
03What future tools look like
04Every long-term prediction
Worth doing now Build habits that remain useful even as the tools change.
START TODAY
Understand the basics Learn enough to recognise what AI can and cannot reliably do.

You do not need to become technical. A working understanding makes future headlines, workplace changes and new tools easier to evaluate.

Les Moir
Your human guide

Les on the future of AI.

The useful question is not whether every prediction comes true. It is what is happening now, what evidence we have and what sensible action we can take today.

Your AI World / Just Curious

You don’t need a reason to start. Curiosity is enough.

If AI still feels like a collection of strange words and big claims, start with one question you genuinely care about. You do not need to understand everything at once.

Start with this How does AI actually work without all the technical jargon?
How does AI work? WHAT ARE YOU
WONDERING?

Many AI systems learn patterns from large amounts of data and use those patterns to generate or choose useful outputs from your input.

Start with what the system does before worrying about the jargon.
Choose a rabbit hole
01

Pick the part that sounds interesting.

There is no required order. Each topic gives you the plain-English idea, a simple example and one misunderstanding worth avoiding.

How it works
PLAIN ENGLISH

Think patterns, context and prediction before you think “magic.”

In plain English Many AI systems are trained to recognise patterns in data and produce an output that fits the input and context they receive.
Simple example A chatbot does not search a tiny book of prepared sentences. It generates a response from patterns it learned and the conversation in front of it.
People often misunderstand A natural-sounding answer does not automatically mean the system understands the world in the same way a person does.
Keep in mind Different AI systems work differently, so the useful question is always: what can this particular system actually do?
Try one tiny experiment
02

Learn AI by giving it one small job.

Pick an experiment, then compare a vague request with a clearer one. You are not learning “prompt engineering.” You are simply seeing what happens when the AI understands your goal better.

Explain

Ask for an explanation that matches what you already know.

ASK IT DIFFERENTLY
Prompt 1 “Tell me about compound interest.” Useful, but the AI has to guess your level and what you need.
Prompt 2 “Explain compound interest to someone who has never studied finance. Use one simple example.” More context gives the AI a clearer target.
Notice what happens Do not just judge whether the answer sounds good.
01Did it understand what you wanted?
02Was anything obviously wrong or missing?
03What changed when you added context?
Simple lesson AI usually becomes more useful when you explain the audience, goal and kind of answer you want.
Les Moir
Your human guide

Les on getting curious about AI.

You do not need to understand everything before you start exploring. One useful question and one small experiment is enough to begin.

“Start with the question you genuinely care about. Curiosity is usually a better starting point than trying to learn AI all at once.”
